Just An Online Minute... Nets Sharpen Web Tactics

As the networks gear up to roll out their new fall shows, they're also coming out with new Web strategies for those programs.

In a two-year deal reported last night by Variety, ABC.com will stream four Warner Bros. TV shows aired on ABC -- "Pushing Daisies," "Men in Trees," "Notes From the Underbelly," and "Big Shots."

ABC will be able to stream shows for up to four weeks after they air. Next year, Warner Bros. TV will have the right to stream reruns of the shows and sell downloads of them.

ABC and Warner Bros. TV aren't the only networks with new distribution strategies. NBC also is revamping its Web game plan. Not only is the network launching Hulu, an online joint venture with News Corp., but it's also going to sell downloads of its fall TV shows on Amazon's Unbox. That move follows a well-publicized falling out with Apple, though older NBC shows will still be sold on iTunes through at least December.

Under the NBC-Amazon deal, consumers will be able to view pilots of the new shows "Bionic Woman," "Chuck," "Journeyman" and "Life," via Unbox, but the service only works on PCs -- unlike iTunes, which is compatible with both PCs and Macs. Shows purchased from Amazon Unbox also won't play on iPods.
