Telemundo Developing Mobile News App

Telemundo is keeping pace with high rates of mobile adoption in its target audience by developing a Spanish-language news app especially designed for smartphones and Apple Watch.

The “Noticias Telemundo” app, a collaboration between NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises’ Digital and Emerging Business division and Telemundo News, is scheduled to launch on November 8, exactly one year before the 2016 presidential election.

The “Noticias Telemundo” app will be able to draw on content from a number of Telemundo News programs, including morning show “Un Nuevo Día,” “Al Rojo Vivo” for celebrity and entertainment news and the nightly newscast “Noticiero Telemundo,” as well as NBC News.

Telemundo claims it will be the only Spanish-language app providing real-time results on election night, courtesy of NBC News.

“Noticias Telemundo” users will be able to personalize their usage with custom notifications and location-based content in categories like weather. It will also offer live-streaming video.

Telemundo noted the results of a recent Nielsen survey showing that 72% of U.S. Hispanics own smartphones, about 10% more than the U.S. average. Meanwhile a Google Consumer survey found that Hispanics are about 1.5 more likely to buy mobile apps than non-Hispanic peers.

This is the latest in a series of initiatives from Telemundo aiming to expand distribution and reach millennial Hispanics via new digital channels. Last year for example, Telemundo and Mashable joined forces to create a new Spanish-language content hub, “#ElPulso via Mashable,” centered on a dedicated page on Telemundo.com powered by content from Mashable.

It includes articles, photo galleries and custom videos, focusing on the role of technology in the rapidly changing modern world.
