NBCU To Start OTT Comedy Service Seeso In January

NBCUniversal has revealed the name of its anticipated streaming comedy over-the-top service -- Seeso -- and new details.

The ad-free subscription platform will feature original and library TV programs, as well as films, costing consumers $3.99 a month. It will be available starting January 2016 -- on Seeso.com and on streaming platforms, connected devices and other distribution partners.

Comedy content includes NBC’s late-night programming -- “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” and “Saturday Night Live” -- as well as series such as the U.S. and U.K. versions of “The Office,” “Parks and Recreation,”  “30 Rock,”  “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” and “The Kids in the Hall.”

One of the different features about Seeso is search. It includes a function allowing viewers to continue watching while they look for what to watch next. Also a “free-forever front porch” enables viewers to see a subset of Seeso content with no credit card required. Only an email address is needed.

“Big streaming services have created a paradox of choice — they’re great if you know exactly what to watch, but if you aren’t in the middle of a binge, the search can be near endless,” states Evan Shapiro, EVP of NBCUniversal Digital Enterprises.

Seeso will provide comedy programming updated with new content every day, including new episodes of original comedy, live-streamed stand-up every month and acquired series and films.

One original show comes from Dan Harmon, creator of NBC’s “Community,” called “HarmonQuest.” The show combines live action and animation. Another, “The UCB Show,” comes from hosts, creators of the Upright Citizens Brigade -- Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh, Ian Roberts and Matt Besser.

Many more like this will soon be on the way as competition in the SVOD category intensifies and with it, the inevitable audience fragmentation and subscriber churn.
