WPP's AKQA Buys Control Of Web App Specialist Potato

WPP digital agency AKQA has acquired a majority stake in London-based Potato, a specialist shop that designs and builds Web applications.

Terms were not disclosed, but WPP indicated that Potato generated nearly $10 million in revenue in its last full fiscal year.

Founded in 2010, Potato employs around 100 people and is headquartered in London, with offices in Bristol and San Francisco.

The firms said that Potato’s teams will continue to operate independently, collaborating with AKQA on shared initiatives and projects. Potato's clients include Google, Canon, PayPal, News International and agencies, such as BBH and Mother. The shop is overseen by Co-Founder and CEO Jason Cartwright.

AKQA itself was acquired by WPP in 2012 for an estimated $500 million-plus. At the time, the acquisition was said to be one of the largest acquisitions of a digital ad agency.
