Friedrich Nietzsche is best known for his works Thus Spake Zarathustra (1883-92) and Beyond Good and Evil (1886) and his famous statement that "God is dead". The phrase first appeared in his 1882 work The Gay Science and repeated several times, including in Thus Spake Zarathustra. Other key Nietzschean concepts include the superman (Übermensch) — the overman who rises above the herd and ideas of good and evil.
