Yahoo's Shine Doubles As "Frienemy"

Yahoo looks intent on stealing the "frienemy" mantle away from rival Google, says Mahalo founder and Web 2.0 blogger Jason Calacanis, after it released a new site dedicated to women's content. Shine employs writers and editors from publications like The Wall Street Journal and Jane. "Isn't Yahoo's business to partner with sites like Jane and the WSJ?" he asks. "Isn't the point of the Yahoo Publisher Network to support and grow publishers and newspapers?"

In effect, by creating more original content, Yahoo has decided to compete with its existing and potential customers for traffic-something Google would never do. The search giant loves to organize content and make its Web pages a destination for users, but it never hires writers and editors to create content that would compete with the information it's trying to organize.

Calacanis goes on to list Shine's competitor/partners. "Can you imagine what it would be like to go to WSJ, Jane, iVillage, Glam, or Sugar publishing and try and get them to support Yahoo services?"
