Obama FCC Pick Under The Microscope

He's a former IAC/InterActiveCorp executive, a venture capitalist and a former employee of the Federal Communications Commission. He also attended Harvard Law School with Barack Obama and served as the President-elect's technology advisor during his run to the White House. The Wall Street Journal reports that industry and consumer groups are now scouring the nine-page technology plan crafted by Julius Genachowski, Obama's nominee for FCC Chair, for indications as to how he might run the agency.

In the plan, Obama, pledged to revamp government programs to expand the reach of high-speed Internet service. He also expressed support for "network neutrality," which would prohibit ISPs from moving some Web traffic at slower speeds than others. This is a particularly big issue for large Internet, telecom and cable companies.

For the last 10 years, Genachowski worked his way up the corporate ladder at IAC, from general counsel to head of business development, and later, he formed his own venture capital firm. "The Obama campaign and administration has just lucked onto the fact that they have someone this talented," said IAC founder and CEO, Barry Diller.
