  • Yahoo Buzz Takes Down Barriers

    Yahoo Buzz, the Web portal's social news platform, is opening its doors to content from Web publishers from to niche blogs. The site, which ranks stories based on user voting, launched six months ago with about only about 100 top publishers before expanding to 400. Buzz buttons have increasingly been popping up on third-party sites alongside other social bookmarks such as Digg, Sphere and Reddit. Yahoo says the service has drawn 5 million users to date.   • Set To Invest $10 M In Geothermal Tech is set to invest more than $10 million into Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) technology, as part of its RE EGS goes beyond the traditional approach to geothermal energy -- which involves finding naturally occurring pockets of steam or hot water to produce electricity -- by replicating the process. EGS systems actually fracture hot rock and circulating water through it to create turbine-powering steam.   • Visa Tests Mobile Transaction Alerts

    Visa has launched a pilot program testing real-time transaction alerts sent to mobile phones via SMS text-messaging and e-mail. Joining in the trial involving 2,000 participants are PNC Bank, SunTrust Bank, U.S. Bank, Wachovia and Wells Fargo in the U.S. as well as Royal Bank of Canada, TD Bank Financial Group and Vancity in Canada. The service would give cardholders notification of account activity within seconds rather than hours or days.
