ABC Leads in Prime Time; NBC Takes Adults 18-49

ABC led in average prime-time viewership and NBC captured the adults ages 18-49 demographic in the sixth week of the TV season ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research.

In total household rankings, ABC captured a 9.3 rating and a 15 share (9.53 million households). The rating number represents the percentage of the nation's total of 102.2 million households tuned in to a certain network. Share represents the percentage of television sets in use.

NBC was second in the total household ranking with a 9.3 rating/15 share (9.48 million households). CBS came in third with an 8.3 rating/13 share and Fox was fourth with a 5.9 rating/9 share.

In the 18-49 demographic, which is highly desired by advertisers, NBC was the winner with a 5.5 rating (14 share), followed by ABC with 5.2 (13), Fox with 4.4 (11) and CBS with 3.8 (10).

The WB Network reached a 3.1 rating/5 share in total household rankings, and its rating among adults 18-49 was 2.1.

In total household rankings, UPN had a 2.9 rating/4 share last week. Its rating among adults 18-49 was 2.0.

PAX TV had a total household rating of 1.0 and a 2 share. Among adults 18-49, it had a 0.4 rating.

NBC had a slight lead in the November sweeps after the second week, with a 5.6 rating average among adults 18-49 over ABC's 5.0. Fox had a 4.7 average, with CBS at a 3.6. NBC and ABC ran neck-and-neck in the second sweeps week in a virtual dead heat among adults 18-49, with NBC at 5.5 and ABC at 5.4. ABC averaged 14.5 million viewers in primetime, edging NBC with 13.6 million viewers.

CBS had 11.8 million viewers, with Fox at nine million viewers. NBC and ABC both benefited from the one-two finish in election night ratings. NBC had five of the top 10 rated shows for the week - its Thursday night lineup - while ABC's Monday Night Football and Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? were also there. Fox's potent Sunday night trio, led by the X-Files also finished in the top ranks for the week. ABC's Monday Night Football barn-burner between the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders gave ABC an edge in the Monday night primetime ratings. MNF drew 17.5 million viewers in prime, with a 7.6 rating, 18 share among adults 18-49 in Nielsen fast national numbers. Fox's Boston Public slipped slightly from its last episode to a 5.0/12. Ally McBeal followed with a 6.6/14. CBS's Monday night sitcoms also showed their usual strength, with Everybody Loves Raymond hitting a 7.6/17 and Becker backing that up with a 6.2/13. NBC's In the Beginning Bible story slumped to a less than epic climax with a 4.0/9 among 18/49ers. Nielsen's top rated program for the week ending November 12 was NBC's "ER" on Thursday with a rating of 18.7. It was followed by "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" (ABC, 16.0, Sun), "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" (ABC, 14.7, Wed), "Monday Night Football" (ABC, 14.6, Mon), "Friends" (NBC, 14.5, Thu), "Everybody Loves Raymond" (CBS, 13.3, Mon), "The Practice" (ABC, 13.2, Sun), "Law
