Wal-Mart Remodel Sends Magazines to Back of Store

  • Folio, Wednesday, September 9, 2009 11:16 PM

In Wal-Mart's new remodeling program, magazines will be shifted to the back of stores. About 650 existing and soon-to-open stores nationwide are adopting the new floor-plan.

In the remodel, the books and magazines aisle will be moved from the front-end of the store to the Entertainment department, where music, movies, electronics and games are sold. "Books and magazines often flow right along into widespread entertainment mediums that work together -- look at Harry Potter, for example," says a company rep. The new magazine aisle will be near the movies and music area, where customers can pursue entertainment selections based on interest and genre.

Wal-Mart management believes they can gain significant market share in the entertainment category, says Richard Alleger, Rodale's retail senior vice president. "A lot of in-store attention will be brought to this area, which is good for our category."
