Delay Sought In Google Book Search Settlement

  • September 22, 2009
Google, the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers are seeking to postpone a hearing about their controversial settlement of a copyright lawsuit. The settlement would create a new book registry and allow Google to digitize and sell books, including orphan works -- books under copyright but whose owners can't be found. Many outside parties, including the Department of Justice, filed comments expressing concerns about this proposal. The hearing is now slated for Oct. 7, but Google and the authors and publishers said in court papers that they need more time to amend the settlement agreement to address concerns raised by the Department of Justice and others. --Wendy Davis
