'NYT' Research Team Plans Connected Devices, Apps

The research and development group of The New York Times is a team of 13 full-timers that has spent nearly four years reviewing the newest technologies for use in spreading news and advertising.

What have they come up with? The group is currently looking at new ways to connect the various devices consumers use to get information. In the R&D group's "Living Room," a 52-inch flat-screen TV offers content that also is found on the Times' Web site, mobile phone applications, and a laptop. In the future, a reader might see an article, podcast or video on the Times' site via a computer and later follow it in a car and eventually at home watching TV.

Ad applications could similarly follow consumers across devices. For instance, if you are on your phone and see a movie ad, you can click and it will go to your TV, where you can the movie trailer in high-def. Such connected applications could be in use by Times readers within a year, say Times researchers.
