Retailer Tricks That Consumers Don't Buy

If you put on your consumer's hat for a moment, I bet you'll recognize quite a few of the "15 most annoying habits" of retailers that Amey Stone has collected from readers' feedback. How about "contantly rearranging the shelves?" I'm still looking for the Goya mango juice in what's now the coffee aisle at the A&P myself.

The biggest complaint is the increasingly common practice of requiring shoppers to buy several of the same item to get a discount -- the "buy 10 for $10" gambit. "If you only need one, that's no sale at all," writes one disgruntled customer. What's worse, IMHO, is that you never know if you can get away with buying just one Turkey Hill ice cream in a two-fer-one offer. Man, does that ever add calories.

Other complaints include upselling at the register, rebates that you have to mail in and mispriced items. Then there's one that doesn't bother me at all: being told how much I've saved by the clever use of my Bonus Card. One reader says it insults her intelligence but I've never been one to turn away mad from an "attaboy."
