'New York' Pushes Toward Mobile With iPhone-Supported App

New York announced this week that its subscription iOS app is now available for iPhone, signifying a greater push toward mobile.

According to editor-in-chief Adam Moss, nearly half of New York’s Web visits come from mobile devices in an “increasingly mobile media landscape.”

“We saw a demand for a print-like experience optimized for iPhone,” Moss stated.

The previously available iPad app is now usable across devices with a single activation, making it a universal app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

“The iPhone app provides a new way to expand our digital footprint, joining desktop and mobile webb, iPad app, Facebook Instant Articles, Apple News and content syndication,” stated digital general manager Michael Silberman.

Silberman added that they wanted to provide “many different ways” for subscribers to access New York's premium content.

The iPhone-optimized app was developed in-house and has a simplified navigation with full interactive capabilities, according to a statement.

All New York print and digital subscriptions will now include access to the app’s content. The iOS edition can also be purchased separately in-app via iTunes.

Moss stated that the updated app could also lure readers “who like the digital experience” to get an all-digital subscription.

The paid magazine content includes redesigned versions of the biweekly print magazine optimized for the iPhone, plus app exclusives and special multimedia content, like a new film by artist Laurie Simmons to accompany a portfolio in this year’s Spring Fashion issue.

The app also includes a daily live news feed from New York Media’s websites, which include nymag.com, Vulture, the Cut, Grub Street, and Science of Us.

The 2015 edition of New York’s popular “Reasons to Love New York” issue is included for free with app download.

The current version of the app has five reviews and a five-star rating on iTunes.
