Mozilla Inks Search Deal with Baidu For Firefox

  • December 10, 2007
Mozilla Online, the Chinese subsidiary of Mozilla Corp., has announced a search deal that will integrate Baidu into the Firefox Web browser.

Much like the deal that Mountain View, Calif.-based Mozilla has with Google here in the U.S., the company will earn revenue for every search that Firefox users carry out with Baidu. Although financial terms were not disclosed, Mozilla Online stands to gain significantly from the partnership, as Baidu is the leading search engine in China (with market share reportedly at 74.5% according to CNNIC).

Meanwhile, the deal will also help to expand Mozilla Online's presence in China, as the company is facing steep competition from Maxthon, another free browser that sources say holds up to 30% of the Chinese browser market.
