• Just An Online Minute... Time To Crank The Mungo Jerry, It's Summertime!
This morning was quite possibly the most beautiful Monday walk to work I have ever had. The smell of the air (minus the lung-crisping secondhand smoke I have to deal with) made me wistful for my old Internet technology lab team at IBM (it was called WebAhead at the time). Lousy with above-genius-level software engineers and inventive IT architects, the lab was corralled by the lone communications type, moi, on sun-drenched days just like today. Destination? Outdoor lunch of hotdogs and cheese fries at Corey's in Southbury, Conn., a no- dead hotdog stand situation with either a large carved bear …
  • Just An Online Minute... Digital DUMBO Gets HUGE
Do you start each week with a list of not necessarily specific tactics to destroy the week, but those overarching thematic goals? Yeah, I used to make fun of those people, but guess what? I set goals this week inspired by an incredibly sore jaw and a constantly lurching heart rate. I'm not a neurosurgeon or a premature baby rubber, so what can possibly increase my heart rate to late-night tooth-grinding status?
  • Just An Online Minute... Doh! It's The Digital Out Of Home (DOOH) Awards!
Last night MediaPost held its first annual Digital Out of Home (DOOH!) Awards Show at the Times Square Crowne Plaza. I covered the end of day cocktail reception as well, which netted me the most personality-filled photos, of course. I have two things to say about a very neglected chunk of the advertising world (ahem, we're talking about you, Digital Out Of Homers): they're jolly. They're smart about cocktails. I ran into more than one attendee armed with two beverages at a time because "Why would I want to get back in line?"
  • Just An Online Minute... Lee Woodruff Launches Perfectly Imperfect At JWT
Get ready to think I'm stupid. So, Matt Van Hoven, blogger over at mediabistro's AgencySpy used to tweet things like "Crashing the bar at JWT!" and I'd chortle self-consciously even when working from home alone because I had no idea what JWT was. Now look, I'm not ashamed to admit that when writing this column I don't necessarily know all the Adverland hierarchy and dirty tidbits and saucy scandals, and I kind of like to keep it that way -- it keeps me open and unguarded around people who work for "Super duper agency" and also keeps my brain from …
  • Just An Online Minute... Media 3.0 Discussion Yields The Lone Gun Man
What do trench foot, gherkins, newspaper death knells, and acerbic Pinky and the Brain conversation style (oh, and a brilliant hot pink tie) have in common? They're all part of Gotham Media Ventures' panel discussion, "Media 3.0: What's Next?" Did I walk out of there drier than I walked in? Nope. Did I leave wanting to wring Michael Wolff's neck, or maybe just mashed-potato-wrestle him? No comment. Did I walk out with a brighter view of what's next? Absolutely not, but the panel was shockingly entertaining, and I only zoned out once, thinking about the slab of Trader Joe's meat …
  • Just An Online Minute... NHL Tweetup, I'm Lovin' It
Prepare yourself, my little Internet pals, for a Twitter-chubby column today. Brace yourself against the Tweetspeak, the "@" signs, the handles, the hashtags. It's unavoidable because last night I covered a TweetUp - an in-the-skin gathering of people who "know" each other on Twitter. That's right, it's the "do your spunky 140 characters-or-less blurbs translate into reality?" test. And it all happened in the NHL store on 6th Avenue, as the NHL hosted their very first ever hockey fan tweetup with The Rangers playing on the store's Stay-Puff-Marshmallow-Man-sized screen, icy-cold (and lukewarm) bottles of Bud Light, and flashback-inducing McDonald's. That's …
  • Just An Online Minute... EVERYDAY Is Magazine Day!
I'm going to hit you Cliff's Notes style from the get-go today. The Advertising Club's Magazine Day revealed to me that some magazine publishers, some with big names, and some new to the scene, aren't blind to changes in media consumption. In fact, I now have a professional crush on Betty Confidential.com Editor-in-Chief Myrna Blyth. Not only is she whip-smart, but she doesn't pussyfoot around. I only recently heard of BettyConfidential.com at an event at Saks a few weeks ago and I have a feeling we're going to keep hearing about the site because Myrna is plugged in. My other …
  • Just An Online Minute... There Is No Cure For Brandhacking
Last night was my first ever Brandhackers Meetup. Actually, I'd have to say it's my first Meetup ever. I know there are a lot out there to choose from, too. There's the gerbil support network MeetUp, there's Julia Kaganskiy's Arts, Culture, and technology MeetUp, there is even a New York/New Jersey Pearl Jam Meetup - and to the members, none is more important than the other. Last night's NYC Brandhackers Speaker Series featured John Gerzema, Chief Insights Officer for Young & Rubicam Group and author of "The Brand Bubble: the looming crisis in brand value and how to avoid it." …
  • Just An Online Minute... Put Your Helmets On - Industry Party Gauntlet Ahead!
No I am not going to make any April showers and May flowers references. Mainly because we've already seen more snow than I care to in the official spring season. So far April has been gentle with the amount of events it's slamming my way (for now), but it has more than made up for quantity with quality. All the while I'm trying to avoid the call of peeps, chocolate peanut butter eggs, and the ever present and taunting pizza. That's right, I celebrate the Easter holiday with pizza. Not really, but I like to talk about pizza. So let's …
  • Just An Online Minute... Spring Ahead With The Advertising Club At Sidebar!
I've walked by Sidebar a bunch of times and usually find myself thrusting through bodies of yuppie types spilling out onto the sidewalk to take a smoke break between innings or quarters. Did I think I'd find myself there for an industry event? Never! It just seems so generic sportsbar-y. The organizers of "Spring Ahead: The Ad Club Networking Cocktail Party" had better foresight than I! So come on, stop looking at the stupid snow (yup, we had a little flake-fest here in NYC this morning) and pop into Sidebar to peek into the world of networking advertypes.
