Stranger Than (Science) Fiction

How do you get your content found in a “curated world?” If you’re the Sci Fi Channel, you do it by changing your name to something that won’t be mistaken for the content you cover. Huh? Yeah, that was my reaction when Craig Engler, senior VP-general manager of SciFi Digital said during this afternoon’s OMMA Video session.

So instead of Sci Fi, or Sci-Fi, or SciFi, Engler said the NBC Universal cable channel is altering its identity to Syfy. I kid you not.

Engler explained that the main reason is to “distinguish” the channel and its companion Web site from the content and the entertainment genre it presents. Or just maybe, the Sci Fi management team is being true to their community, and operating in an alternate universe. Kind of like the Bizarro version of a science-fiction channel.

In any case, I’m wondering what the search optimization team that operates in this universe thinks about that one.
