Joe Chernov Sums Up Social, Imperfectly

And the answer is, there is no such thing as perfection. Certainly not when it comes to social media. To prove it, he did some research.

Figuring that social media is essentially about people, Chernov, who is director of content at Eloqua, searched for the perfect people to see if they would unearth some clues about social media.

Using Google, he searched for the "perfect" man and the "perfect" woman, and not surprisingly, ended up with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, respectively. But they shed little insight in regards to social media.

"There is no perfect person. There is no secret formula for social media," Chernov concluded.

There are no social media silver bullets, to be sure, given recent data about the cost and effectiveness of Facebook advertising.

Still, effective mobile marketing depends on the presence of key performance drivers, including:
    • blends with users' real-life activities
    • respects their privacy
    • enhances shared experiences and
    • offers new and improved features to capitalize on existing behaviors, such as texting and IM
    • no distractions, no check-ins, no delays, and no triple click-throughs
It helps the marketer tell a story, keeps the conversations real, brings people together, and creates shared experiences around the brand's story.
