Gone Sailing

By the time you read this, I will be a few hundred miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. My father and I are delivering our 46-foot sailboat from Fort Lauderdale to New York City -- over 1,000 miles.


Most people perceive this as an exotic, carefree vacation -- like lounging on a beach with a frozen daiquiri.

It’s not. This annual trip entails physical endurance, some patches of rough weather, sleep deprivation and a lot of focus. I don’t get seasick, though most people do for the first few days. I wouldn't advise attempting a trip like this unless you really know what you're doing.

But this trip also entails connecting with the elements and the heavens, thinking for longer-than-normal durations, and eating a few freshly caught fish (most likely mahi-mahi and tuna). It’s always a treat when dolphins or pilot whales accompany you as well.


We are out of range of mobile signals. Besides, LCD screens and electronic gizmos are generally no match for even light spray on a calm day.


This is my time to step out of the race and recharge a bit.
