Blitz Media, a three-decades-old Waltham, Mass., media buying and planning shop, laid off most of its staff last week and is in the process of shutting down, former employees told the Business Journal.

Blitz had about three dozen employees at the time of the closing announcement.

Company executives could not be reached for comment. A memo from a Blitz executive to a former client, obtained by the Boston Business Journal, attributes Blitz's demise to "economic circumstances beyond its control."

According to a former employee who declined to be identified, Blitz recently lost several important clients or business partners.

Blitz is employee-owned and overseen by a small board of directors.
