Write Congress Today About Ukraine Aid Bill

  • by , Featured Contributor, April 18, 2024
The most important and consequential thing that you as an American can do today is to write the members of your Congressional delegation (those in the U.S. House of Representatives and both of your U.S. Senators) and urge them to vote in support of the House bill that is about to come before them to provide $60 billion of new aid to Ukraine to help it repel Russian invaders.

I delivered that message this morning in a talk at the LG Client Advisory Board in Miami (an incredible event by an incredible company, by the way), where I was privileged to speak to the group on two of my favorite topics: the future of the connected TV advertising market -- and, how we can all make a difference in the world and help Ukraine.

I arrived in Florida directly from Washington, D.C., where I spent the early part of the week talking to folks on Capitol Hill trying to learn as much as I could about prospects in the House for the foreign aid bills (Ukraine, Israel & Taiwan) and what could be done to help them pass. As I’ve written here before, I believe that providing this aid is essential for the United States to promote freedom, democracy and the rule of law, to maximize access to open markets and free trade, and to maintain the country’s important global leadership role.

Yesterday, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R) announced the foreign aid bills, released their texts and put the bills on a timeline to be voted on the floor by the full House this Saturday, delaying by two days a planned week-long recess for members. Shortly after that announcement, President Joe Biden publicly endorsed the package and called for bipartisan support for its passage.

Without the military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine provided for in the bill, the chances that at some point over the next few years we will see NATO -- and American -- “boots on the ground” in direct confrontations with Russians and their proxies will go up dramatically.

What can you do to help?

Write Congress. Emails sent to members of Congress are incredibly powerful, much more so that most people think. Their sentiments and counts are tracked and reported internally on a daily basis, and make a big difference. Mail traffic to most Republican House members had been running negative to the Ukraine aid bill until the past few weeks, when they tide shifted and the majority of constituent mail was in support of  aid.

You can find your Congress members' email addresses on their official websites, with representatives listed here and senators listed here. Your message can  be simple: Identify yourself as a constituent, identify the town, city or township that you live in, ask for her or his support in favor of providing aid to Ukraine, and let them know why you care (supporting freedom, democracy, humanity, etc.).

Please do it today. It can make a real difference, and we don’t have much time. Thank you.
