FuboTV Drops WBD's Networks Due To 'Above Market Rates'

Ramping up its tough stance against big media companies that want to start up a major sports-focused streaming platform, now sports-focused virtual pay TV provider FuboTV is dropping Warner Bros. Discovery networks from its service.

The company says this is because WBD asked for “above-market rates” for its network content.

Concerning recent network carriage negotiations with the company, FuboTV said in a release on Tuesday that it “views Warner Brothers Discovery's refusal to engage in good faith negotiations as another example of its abuse of massive market power that ultimately limits consumer choice.”

FuboTV did not provide detailed financial information with regard to specific rates that were above market.

At the end of 2023, FuboTV had 1.62 million paid subscribers.

The company says re-negotiation deals included networks Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network and TLC, among others. At the same time FuboTV was also wanting to include new licensing rights for WBD's Turner sports networks TNT, TBS, and TruTV.  Warner Bros. says TNT, TBS, and TruTV haven't been on FuboTV since 2020. As of April 30, FuboTV dropped Discovery, HGTV, Food Network and TLC, among others channels.

Responding to an inquiry by Television News Daily,a Warner Bros. Discovery said: "We have been and remain ready and willing to work diligently with Fubo to reach a fair market agreement. We proposed an extension of our current agreement, with no changes or price increases, that would allow Fubo to continue carrying these networks, and it is unfortunate that Fubo has decided to alienate their own customers in this way."

This all comes after FuboTV filed a lawsuit in February against WBD, ESPN, and Fox for their plans to start a major streaming sport-focused streaming platform, as part of those companies' overall efforts to engage in “anti-competitive practices” toward Fubo's business.

At the time David Gandler, cofounder/CEO of FuboTV, said in a release: “Each of these companies has consistently engaged in anticompetitive practices that aim to monopolize the market, stifle any form of competition, create higher pricing for subscribers and cheat consumers from deserved choice.”

I thought that Fubo didn't have TNT, TBS, or TRUTV. Reading that it was dropped a few years ago. In a dispute that Fubo and others complain about the rates and don't say what the rates are and put it in 200% in some cases seems to be what Dish says when I read an article about local TV stations going dark. Fubo for a long time didn't have Disney family of networks and no ESPN either, I putting Fubo along with Dish & DirecTV beng the worse not getting deals done in my opinion.
