"The newspaper is dead! Long live the newspaper!" is the headline for a piece explaining why the
Lebanon Daily News is erecting a paywall for online news. It's one of the clearest, friendliest
explanations for such a move that we've seen.
"Today, we are no longer in the newspaper business. Rather, we're in the business of gathering and disseminating local news and information,
continuously and virtually around the clock, in whatever form our 'customers' want to receive it," writes Paul Baker, the paper's managing editor. As "a news organization committed to serving the
community across a variety of media platforms - we feel it makes sense to ask readers across all platforms to support this effort."
Details of the paywall: it's $5.99 a month, or $59.99 a
year, for all online access (which includes all content from sister Media News Group newspapers across Pennsylvania); 1.99 a month or $19.99 a year for print subscribers. The home page, online ads and
all obituaries are available for free.
