Jurassic Park Taps Internet of Things

On June 12, 2015, the fourth installment of the Jurassic Park series hit theaters. The new movie, for those who haven’t watched it, enters with a technologically infused, revamped park complete with a pteradon aviary, a mosasaurus feeding show that would put SeaWorld to shame, and a genetically modified Indominus rex that(spoiler alert) causes more trouble than expected. A major critique is that much of the ‘science’ portrayed in the film leans more toward the fiction side rather than factual accuracy. For example, paleontologists have commented that the dinosaurs are all portrayed as reptilian whereas many would actually have had feathers. Also, the oversimplification of the genetic work done to create the Indominus rex has been another point of controversy. Despite the science fiction of the dinosaur theme park, the technology used in the film is not too far off from what we are able to do today. The Internet of Things plays an integral role in the film in managing the patrons of the park to keeping track of the hundreds of larger than life creatures in each exhibit. Plus, with the IoT in Jurassic World, they kept casualties to a ‘minimum’ when things went awry.
