Both Cuban-American and both 44, Sens. Rubio and Cruz have emerged as strong candidates in the Republican primary race. They both rode the Tea Party wave into the Senate: Rubio in the 2010 and
Cruz in the 2012 election cycles. Now, they being crowded out in the polls by non-politicians Trump and Carson. Many Republican insiders see the senators as the strongest GOP candidates in a general
election (particularly Rubio). In private conversations with colleagues, Sen. Cruz has said that “he believes the race for the party’s nomination will boil down to a contest between
himself and Mr. Rubio.”
