Bulletin, the Facebook newsletter service that followed Substack and Twitter’s Revue into the marketplace in 2021, is being scrapped. 

The service will be shuttered in 2023, according to The New York Times.

Facebook debuted Bulletin in July 2021 with a small group of writers. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the product was designed to help writers, who would have the ability to charge for content and earn a living amid changes in the media ecosystem.  

But one year later, Meta said it was reallocating resources from the Facebook News tab and Bulletin  in favor of building “a more robust Creator economy.”

Shortly before that, Substack laid off 14% of its staff.  

Museletter, the newsletter service rushed out by Google in 2021, lasted barely three months. Only Twitter still seems to be in this business. 

It is not clear why these services have faltered, and whether they were a boon or a hindrance to writers. 

NiemanLab reports that roughly half of the 25 local news writers who joined Bulletin were journalists of color. 

Meanwhile, Meta states, “Bulletin has allowed us to learn about the relationship between Creators and their audiences and how to better support them in building their community on Facebook. While this off-platform product itself is ending, we remain committed to supporting these and other Creators’ success and growth on our platform.”
