A group called American Vapor Manufacturers is challenging Associated Press over what it claims is a conflict of interest.
“AP is receiving millions in funding from the Robert
Wise Johnson Foundation, a staunch advocate of policies that aim to restrict or outlaw nicotine vaping,” said Allison Boughner, vice president American Vapor Manufacturers, in a letter sent
earlier this week to Matthew Peronne, health writer for Associated Press.
Boughner also argued that one of the “sources most often quoted to criticize vaping in AP’s coverage
is American Lung Association which also receives major funding from RWJF.”
The letter was published in a newsletter sent by AVM.
MediaPost was unable to
obtain comment from AP at deadline or independently confirm the allegations.
