The Intercept, a nonprofit news outlet, is laying off 15 “talented and beloved colleagues,” according to an internal memo reported by The New York Times. 

Included in the layoffs is Roger Hodge, editor in chief. 

The nonprofit is aiming for a “more sustainable financial foundation for The Intercept so that we can continue to produce high-quality investigative journalism,” the memo states. 

Other cost-saving measures are “significant salary cuts for the leadership team and the flattening of the management team, to minimize the impact as much as possible.” 

The memo states, “We thank Roger for his leadership in the newsroom and contributions during our transition to an independent organization, and we wish him well.”

It concludes, “This is a difficult and emotional day for all of us. We are losing colleagues who reported, edited, and produced vital journalism and have done incredible work to bring important stories to life. We are grateful for all their contributions.”
