University of New Hampshire Kills Its Journalism Major

In a possible sign that journalism is losing some of its allure with students, the University of New Hampshire is cutting its English/journalism major.

The school will still provide journalism education, but will no longer offer it as a major, the Boston Globe reported.

Instead of being part of the English Department with its heavy emphasis on writing, the school will expose journalism students to classes in other departments, the paper continues.

“This decision comes on the heels of funding challenges, declining enrollment and drastic changes in the journalism business,” UNH spokesperson Tania deLuzuriaga said in a statement to the Globe.

Some editors prefer candidates with a grounding in broader liberal arts.

“This new major will have to go through the University’s curriculum review," added deLuzuriaga, "and we expect it to be ready for the 2025-26 academic year. We will also continue to support journalism students with scholarships, internships, and other professional programming.”
