The New York Times, which closed its news bureau in Vietnam when the war ended in that country in 1975, will re-establish a bureau in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). It will be headed by Damien Cave.
Cave has served as both a metro and international reporter, and in 2017 he opened a new bureau in Sydney. He will bring an “entrepreneurial spirit and varied interests to this new role and beat,” the editors say.
The return to Vietnam reflects Asia’s growing role as an economic and political power center, they add.
The Times has covered events in the country, ranging from the dawn of French colonial rule to the Vietnam War.
