A Boston-area newspaper will close down as part of a defamation settlement.
The 139 year-old Everett Leader Herald will also pay $1.1 million to Carlo Demaria, the mayor of
Everett, Mass, the Boston Globe reports.
The newspaper published untrue articles accusing the mayor of kickback schemes and extortion, the Globe continues. Demaria
filed suit in 2021.
“The evidence in this case, which was extraordinary itself, reflected a three-year-long purposeful, intentional campaign to fabricate articles accusing the
mayor of crimes that the defendants knew were fabricated,” says Jeff Robbins, attorney for DeMaria, according to the Globe.
A trial was to start on Jan. 21,
2025.
The case is on file with Middlesex Superior Court.
