The beleaguered Washington Post has laid off 4% of its staff.
The cuts mostly hit the business side and spared the newsroom, reports state. The layoffs affected 73 people in the advertising department, which is set for a restructuring, the Daily Beast reports, sourcing the New York Times. Other reports put the total number of people being laid off at 100.
The Post suffered a $77 million loss in 2023.
“The Washington Post is continuing its transformation to meet the needs of the industry, build a more sustainable future and reach audiences where they are,” a spokesperson said, the Times reports. “Changes across our business functions are all in service of our greater goal to best position The Post for the future.”
This round of cuts follows the layoff of 54 employees from the Post’s Arc XP division in September 2024. In 2023, 240 individuals left the Post through buyouts.

The Post newsroom has been demoralized by owner Jeff Bezos' decision to not endorse a presidential candidate in 2024, by the rejection of a cartoon showing tech giants, including Bezos, bending the knee to Donald Trump, and by the subsequent resignation of Ann Telnaes, a Pulitzer-Prize-winning cartoonist.
