'The Sun' Tabloid Puts Up A Premium Paywall

Ten years ago, The Sun pulled down its paywall, which then covered all of the paper’s content.

The UK’s biggest tabloid obviously has thought better of that decision. On Tuesday, The Sun launched a premium offering called Sun Club, which for £1.99 a month will feature access to columns from writers like Jeremy Clarkson, and a range of other popular content, including video, according to The Guardian, which famously does not have a paywall.

That is the new paywall model—charge for premium material, but not for everything. It’s a way of generating revenue—and reader engagement.

Sun Club promises “no-holds-barred access to our first-rate content,” The Guardian reports.

“The Sun has always offered readers more than a paper,” says Victoria Newton, editor in chief. “Sun Club will help us expand our offer to audiences even further.”
