'San Diego Reader' Says Goodbye To Print

San Diego Reader has joined the long parade of periodicals to halt their print editions. The last printed issue of the alternative weekly was on February 13.

The Reader is laying off production staff and closing its Golden Hill office. But it will continue publishing online for as long as it can, says Matthew Lickona, the editor who late last year bought the publication for only $1 from Jim Holman, who founded it in 1972.

Lickona hoped to maintain and invest more heavily in print. But that was not to happen.

"I had some runway. I ran out of runway.” Lickona says, according to KPBS.

This is a national trend. For instance, New Jersey’s Star-Ledger published its last print issue earlier this month.
