Mick Sussman And Tom Kaplan Join 'New York Times Standards Desk'

The New York Times has added two editors to its Standards team: Mick Sussman and Tom Kaplan.

Sussman’s task is to be “a force for display type across the newsroom, through evangelizing, training, and day-to-day wisdom and ideas,” according to a note from Susan Wessling, Aisha Khan and Mike Abrams.

Starting at the Times in 1997, Sussman first served as a customer service representative for “The New York Times on the Web.” He went on to become the Books digital editor and was the founding producer of the Book Review podcast.

Sussman estimates that he has written over 10,000 headlines in his career, and believes he will write 10,000 more.

Kaplan, who joined the Times in 2010, was most recently the domestic policy editor in the Washington bureau, overseeing coverage of health care, the federal pandemic response and transportation.

Along the way, he “proved himself to be a thoughtful, collegial and careful editor, thinking through stories from multiple angles to ensure accuracy, fairness and clarity,” says colleague Dick Stevenson. “We hate to lose him, but he’ll be a terrific addition to the Standards team.”
