The Claremont (California) Courier, a nonprofit newspaper, is instituting a so-called “soft” paywall on some stories.
“Each week, five to six articles will require readers to log in to their subscriber account for access,” the paper says in an editorial notice.
The Courier continues, “This change comes in response to a decline in online-only subscriptions over the past two years, even as overall website traffic has grown. As a nonprofit news organization, the Courier relies heavily on subscription revenue to support our dedicated and talented staff.”
A subscription costs $8 per month. It notes, “This will
not affect newspaper subscribers who already have access to the website, though you may be prompted to set up an online login.”
