Stacey Cowles and family will donate Spokane’s The Spokesman-Review to a nonprofit group.
Comma Community Journalism Laboratory, a group founded in 2022, will continue publishing The Spokesman-Review. Comma is housed at the Gonzaga University.
Cowles will match a hoped-for $2 million from donors.
“We’d end up spending at least that much if we continued to own it through five more years of transition toward a digitally dominant model,” Cowles told Poynter.
Cowles added: “Having twice as much gives the paper some cushion and some real ability to face a down year and invest in systems that will improve its ability to reach digital-centric audiences.”
