The Washington Post has named Kimi Yoshino, founding editor in chief of The Baltimore  Banner, as managing editor, effective July 7. 

Yoshino will oversee features, sports, local, investigations and data.

The Banner is now the largest newsroom in Maryland and won a Pulitzer Prize earlier this month under Yoshino’s leadership. 

“I have loved my job building the incredible team at The Baltimore Banner and forging a path for how local news can be sustainable,” Yoshino says. “Only an opportunity like this at The Post could coax me from that mission, and I am excited to get started.” 

The Yoshino hire rounds out the Post’s editorial leadership team, which includes managing editors Jason Anders, Liz Seymour and Peter Spiegel. 

“I’m thrilled for The Post to benefit from Kimi’s sharp editorial eye and tenacious entrepreneurial spirit,” said Matt Murray, executive editor of The Post, to whom Yoshino will report. “Paired with our commitment to journalistic excellence, her leadership will be key as we build our next newsroom chapter.”
