Staffers working for Hearst Connecticut Media Grouphave voted to form a union with the NewsGuild-CWA.
Of the 85 staffers who participated, 68 voted “yes.” They included reporters, photographers, editors and digital producers.3
The Hearst Connecticut staff announced the union drive more than nine months ago. The union says Hearst must begin bargaining in good faith to reach a contract.
However, Hearst has challenged the eligibility of 18 people to serve in the Connecticut News Guild bargaining unit.
“It’s so thrilling to see the overwhelming support from our colleagues in our union drive over the past year finally pay off today,” says Joe Tucci, a reporter and digital producer. “With our united workforce, I believe that we will be able to work together to build a fair, supportive and comfortable workplace for everyone.”
Hearst Newspapers has been acquiring news outlets throughout the state, including the Republican-American in 2025. Employees have experienced shifting job responsibilities and have had to report to offices far from the locales they cover, the union alleges.
