The Buffalo (New York) Newspaper Guild and Buffalo History Museum postponed a Happy Hour event last week after threats prompted concerns about public safety.
Death
threats were made against Adam Zyglis, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist, according to the Buffalo Newspaper Guild. This followed criticism of an editorial cartoon about Texas flooding
published in The Buffalo News last Tuesday.
Zyglis also received other threats against himself and his family.
“We wholly condemn the
individuals who have chosen to twist a positive, public event into an attempt to terrorize and silence Zyglis, spread fear among journalists and their supporters, and distort the mission of a free
press,” the Guild says.
Titled “Drawing Support for Local Journalism,” the free nonpartisan event was focused on the need to safeguard a
strong local free press.
The threats were forwarded to law enforcement.
“Those who stoop to such cowardly, disgraceful and anonymous acts must be held accountable,”
the Guild says.
