Several reporters have accepted buyouts at Gannett’s Arizona Republic.
The buyouts are voluntary, and are being offered companywide. But
the following departures were reported by the Arizona Agenda: reporter Mary Jo Pitzl and over half of the opinions team, including Elvia Diaz, the first Latina to serve as editor for the
paper’s editorial page; and columnists Laurie Roberts, E.J. Montini and Phil Boas.
In July, it was reported that Gannett is laying off 117
workers at its printing facility in Deer Valley, Arizona as it moves printing of The Arizona Republic to Las Vegas.
Gannett recently
announced that it is implementing a $100 million cost reduction as it reported a Q2 revenue decline of 8.6% YoY.
On the positive side, it reported an
4% increase in digital advertising to $87.9 million in Q2, compared to a decline in Q1. The firm expects digital to contribute 50% of its revenue in 2026.
