Patrick Caldwell To Join 'The Washington Post' As A Senior Editor

The Washington Post has hired Patrick Caldwell from Politico as senior editor for political investigations, starting on September 29.  Caldwell will lead the team of journalists on the politics and government desk.

The announcement was made by Lori Montgomery, politics & government editor and Nick Baumann, deputy politics & government editor.

At Politico, Caldwell edited profiles and investigatory pieces. For instance, he led stories on the rise of JD Vance and Karoline Leavitt. And he edited a story on Cold War-era forced adoptions that won the 2025 European Press Prize for distinguished reporting.

In addition, Caldwell oversaw Politico’s annual media issue. Prior to joining Politico, he served at The New Republic and Mother Jones.
