The Atlantic is removing its paywall for
public high schools in the United States.
Schools will have free digital access to The Atlantic’s journalism and 168-year archive. Students and teachers will have this unlimited
access while on campus at no cost. Included are full magazine issues, podcasts, audio articles, Atlantic Games and the archive.
The Atlantic launched
an academic group subscription in July 2023, and has enrolled over 200 colleges, universities, and high schools, reaching more than 1.2 million readers. And it is widely used as a
teaching resource.
“It’s critical for as many students and educators as possible to have access to informed, independent, fact-based journalism,” says Megha Garibaldi, chief
growth officer of The Atlantic. “An informed citizenry is essential to our democracy. As we continue to grow The Atlantic, and the resource-intensive reporting and
writing we publish, we want to ensure it’s available to new generations of readers.”
Breaking paywalls for educational institutions may be a growing trend. The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution recently announced it would provide free digital access to libraries.
