The Salt Lake Tribune, living up to a promise
made some months ago, will drop its paywall sometime in the first quarter of 2026, Lauren Gustus, CEO and executive editor, told a crowd during a fundraising event last week.
“The
Tribune cannot afford to continue to limit who has access to independent and trusted news,” Gustus said, according to The Tribune. “Making the news is only the first step
— we must also ensure people can find it."
Gustus had vowed that Utah’s nonprofit newsroom would kill the paywall if it could raise $1 million in a year.
Apparently it has
done so, but Gustus asked supporters last week to continue to financially support the paper so it can remain available to everyone.
