Throughout his career, Howard Stern has had no more powerful and vocal champion than Mel Karmazin, particularly during Mr. Stern's tangles with the Federal Communications Commission over the content
of his radio program. Now, with Mr. Karmazin's resignation yesterday as president and chief operating officer of Viacom, the always cantankerous Mr. Stern may have added incentive to leave when his
contract expires in less than two years.
