"Grey's" Actor Doing PSA Penance

A public service announcement from Isaiah Washington is set to begin airing this week on ABC, part of the "Grey's Anatomy" star's penance for twice uttering an anti-gay slur. The spot is the result of a January meeting with Neil G. Giuliano, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and Kevin Jennings, founder and executive director of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, after Washington used the word "faggot" during a heated exchange with a colleague and again at the Golden Globe Awards.

Washington later apologized and entered treatment for anger management. His future on the show is unclear as his character was shown packing his bags on the season finale. His agent says he will be back, and ABC declines comment. The spot debuted in two back-to-back episodes of "Grey's" Thursday night. "When you use words that demean a person because of their sexual orientation, race or gender, you send a message of hate," Washington says in the ad. " A very powerful message. But we all have the power to demand better from one another and from ourselves. We have the power to heal and change the world by the words we use."
