Current Looking For Web, TV Convergence

With 70% of the 18-to-34-year-olds watching Current TV fiddling with their laptops at the same time, the 2-year-old net has come up with a plan to draw viewers to its Web site, then back to the TV station in an attempt to convergence the online and broadcast worlds.

At the site, viewers can get assignments from the network's producers with a crack at having their work shown on the tube. Current, founded by former Vice President Al Gore and attorney Joel Hyatt, is now available in 40 million homes. It sees a place for a new type of social media experience linked to migration between two screens, Hyatt says.

Current producers will post an assignment at current.com for a full-fledged story or possibly just a bit of data. They are also putting unused material from the TV segments online and encouraging visitors to add video responses, links, photos and comments.
