Support For Online Content Restrictions Slips Among Americans, Pew Finds

A growing number of Americans are expressing concern about the potential effect of online content restrictions on free speech, the nonprofit Pew Research Center found in a recent survey. The findings show a slight but notable decline in public support for government or tech companies taking action to limit false or violent content on the internet.

About half of Americans (51%) now say the U.S. government should take steps to restrict false information online, even if it curtails freedom of information — down from 55% in 2023. Similarly, 60% believe tech companies should act to limit false content, a drop from 65% two years ago.
