Social media platforms are falling short in both protecting LGBTQ users from online hate and in allowing their voices to be heard, according to the latest yearly report from advocacy group GLAAD. While most platforms formally prohibit hate and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity, GLAAD says those policies are inconsistently enforced — and often accompanied by the over-moderation of legitimate LGBTQ content.
The report, part of GLAAD’s annual Social Media Safety Scorecard, paints a troubling picture: not only are harmful anti-LGBTQ narratives regularly left unchecked, but LGBTQ users are also being disproportionately silenced through wrongful takedowns, mislabeling of content as “explicit,” shadowbanning and demonetization.
