If it feels like everyone you know has already moved to Austin, Denver or somewhere cheaper with better tacos, you aren’t imagining it. But you may be overestimating how far people are actually going. Americans usually stay close to home in ways that are meaningful for media buyers and advertisers, according to a new report from the Bank of America Institute that says people are moving far less often than they did just a few years ago.

The number of people changing cities or states has dropped sharply since 2021, according to Bank of America account data. This isn’t a story of a massive national reshuffle. It is a story of people swapping one nearby metro for another that better fits their budget, climate tolerance or patience for traffic.
